In France, high school students blockaded schools for weeks over underfunded facilities, with demonstrations broadening to include labor unions. Weekend unrest led to 2,400 arrests and severe damage, including the burning of Limoges’ City Hall.
Italy saw violent clashes in Milan, Turin and Bologna – with 271 arrests, mostly minors. The Italian government deployment of 500 additional troops. Truck drivers and farmers in Calabria and Campania blocked roads in protest of fuel costs.
In Spain, tent encampments in Madrid sparked by a fatal eviction led to government housing measures and calls for a general strike on Nov. 11, the first in 14 years, while teachers began an indefinite strike for better pay.
