Cornyn says there is still no deal with Trump admin that would lead to Blanche confirmation

Texas Republican Sen. John Cornyn denied reports Tuesday that he had agreed to confirm Todd Blanche as attorney general later this week, stating that no such deal had been made.Cornyn has stated that he would oppose the nomination unless the Trump administration rewrites a settlement agreement the president reached with the IRS over the leak of his tax information, which created a $1.8 billion “anti-weaponization fund” to compensate Trump allies who said they were targeted by the Biden-era DOJ.
“Fake news alert: there is no ‘deal’ on Blanche nom,” Cornyn said on X. “They know what they have to do.”
Cornyn’s warning comes ahead of a critical vote on Blanche’s nomination this Thursday, where Cornyn’s opposition could sink the process.
Blanche has repeatedly stated that he would not bring the anti-weaponization fund back after the DOJ agreed to drop it, but Cornyn and North Carolina GOP Sen. Thom Tillis have pointed out that the language in the agreement still exists.
Cornyn, who in May lost his reelection primary bid to Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, said he is in active discussions with Blanche and other Justice Department officials but has not yet secured the revisions he is demanding to the settlement.
The senator told reporters he wants the revised document signed by Blanche personally, though he stopped short of saying whether Trump’s signature would also be required.
