SpaceX CEO Elon Musk said Wednesday that decisions to restrict the military-grade Starlink service Ukraine uses to guide drones rests with the U.S. government and President Donald Trump. The Starshield system, Musk wrote in a post on X, is owned and controlled by the U.S. government.
“Starlink is a commercial service owned and controlled by SpaceX. Usage of Starlink is limited to civilian or defensive activities and cannot be used for offensive military action, as doing so would be inappropriate for a commercial company,” Musk wrote.
Ukrainian military officials alleged Wednesday that SpaceX interrupted military-grade Starlink terminals, which prevented Kyiv from using them to guide drone strikes. Functionality had been restored as of Thursday, NBC News reported, citing an unnamed source in Ukraine’s defense ministry.
