Rep. Frederica Wilson, D-Fla., announced on Friday that she would not seek re-election to a ninth term, marking the latest member of Congress to opt against an attempted return to Washington in November.”I think it’s time, and I think I really held on as long as I did because of the 5000 Role Models program, and my concern about the future of it,” she told the Miami Herald.
She currently represents the 24th Congressional District, which includes much of northern Miami and the Hollywood area. Her decision comes amid the state redrawing its congressional House maps in the wake of the Supreme Court’s ruling in Louisiana v. Callais.
Wilson indicated that she had held off on announcing her retirement due to political considerations and the prospect that an outgoing lawmaker might make Tallahassee more likely to target the district.
She previously denied plans to retire, Fox News reported.
