Sen. Marsha Blackburn, R-Tenn., on Wednesday sued former special counsel Jack Smith over his accessing of her phone records as part of his investigations into President Donald Trump.Smith obtained the phone records of several senators through a subpoena and secured a non-disclosure order from the court preventing the mobile carrier from notifying the lawmakers affected.
Blackburn’s suit alleges that Smith’s acquisition of her records violated the speech and debate clause of the Constitution. She is seeking nominal damages of $1 and a declaration that Smith was unlawfully appointed.
Sen. Bill Hagerty, R-Tenn., on Wednesday announced that he had filed a bar complaint against former special counsel Jack Smith in the wake of his Tuesday testimony on Capitol Hill.
“I filed a bar complaint against Jack Smith this morning. He’s a blatantly partisan actor and his prosecutorial misconduct damaged our constitutional order. He should never be able to practice law again,” Hagerty posted on X.
Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, on Tuesday excoriated former special counsel Jack Smith, saying that his investigation into President Donald Trump had marked an unprecedented abuse of power.
