President Donald Trump took his shiny new Qatari Air Force One plane for a spin on Wednesday, and he couldn’t have been more pleased. “Frankly,” Trump said happily, “we couldn’t build a plane like this because we wouldn’t be willing to spend the kind of money necessary.” Before jetting off to North Dakota, Trump added: “It will be the first flight of what I think is maybe the greatest commercial plane ever built ‘What’s the best one?’ They said, ‘This is the best plane ever built,’ and you’re gonna have the privilege of flying it, and I have the privilege also of flying it.”
The president was just as happy with the givers as he was with his new gift. He said that the plane “cost very little” to U.S. taxpayers to fit it out with everything it needed to serve as Air Force One, “relative to what it would cost if we did it a different way.” Trump explained: “This was a gift from a country that’s treated us very well. And they’re an ally of us over in the Middle East, Qatar. The Emir Tamim, who’s a great gentleman, he said, ‘No, no, I’d like to make a contribution to the country.’ So, it was very nice.”
