A Dominican Republic judge found Tampa Bay Rays shortstop Wander Franco criminally responsible for the sexual and psychological abuse of a 14-year-old girl, then exempted him from punishment, ruling that Franco was simultaneously a victim of extortion and blackmail by the girl’s mother.
Franco, 25, received a two-year suspended sentence. He will serve no time behind bars. Prosecutors had sought five years in prison.
