The federal government on Monday launched a system to process and deliver tariff refunds on Monday to return money to businesses that paid them after the Supreme Court found specific tariffs that President Donald Trump imposed to be illegal. The system is under the purview of U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the Associated Press reported. Specifically, the refunds address tariffs paid on the duties Trump imposed under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA).
The Supreme Court earlier this year, ruled that the IEEPA did not grant the president the authority to impose tariffs. IEEPA tariffs raised roughly $166 billion in revenue.
To be eligible for a refund, the company must file a registration. As of press time, CBP indicated that tens of thousands of importers had done so, accounting for roughly $127 billion in potential refunds.
Trump has imposed tariffs under a number of statutory authorities and many tariffs remain in place.
