Two people dead in military helicopter crash in Texas

Two people died Wednesday in a military helicopter crash in Salado, Texas, according to the local Bell County Sheriff’s Office.The two people, who were onboard the aircraft at the time, were pronounced dead after officials responded to 911 calls around 1:30 p.m. local time. The AH-64 U.S. Army Apache attack helicopter was based out of Fort Hood.
No structures were damaged in the crash and no other injuries have been reported. The victims have not been identified.
“It crashed into a field, and you could tell it was a violent crash,” Cliff Coleman of the Bell County Sheriff’s Office told reporters.
Coleman also noted that the crash caused a fire that “looks to be out of control,” and prompted some evacuations. Local emergency responders, military personnel and law enforcement all responded to the scene, according to NBC News.
The United States military has not released a cause of the crash, but an investigation is being conducted by the criminal investigation division of Fort Hood.
“Our immediate priority is securing the site and supporting the initial response efforts,” Brig. Gen. Ethan Diven, acting commanding general, said in a statement. “Our thoughts are with the crew and their families as we await further information.”
