Chronic low magnesium levels, confirmed by two blood tests within a year, were associated with a 74% higher risk of nontraumatic intracranial hemorrhage.
The risk was even greater—roughly double—for those with severely low magnesium levels below 1.5 mg/dL.
Researchers analyzed medical records of over 266,000 matched patient pairs from the TriNetX Global Collaborative Network.
While relative risk was substantial, absolute numbers remained small: 0.52% of low-magnesium patients experienced brain bleeds versus 0.31% in the normal group.
The study suggests magnesium’s role in blood vessel function and blood pressure regulation may explain the connection.
A silent risk factor emerges
