President Donald Trump will lower tariffs on an array of Canadian goods ahead of election day in a bid to boost Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, her campaign said Friday.Trade disputes between Washington and Ottawa have rocked local economies and Collins has been one of their stronger critics. Her campaign said that the administration would lower tariffs on a total of nine types of products critical to statewide industries, Politico reported.
Canada and the U.S. nearly clinched a trade agreement earlier this year, but it fell apart at the last moment, resulting in a high-profile public row between Trump and Ontario Premier Doug Ford that led Trump to rename Lake Ontario to “Lake America.”
Collins’s race is currently set to be one of the most competitive in the country in the battle for the Senate, but she has a long history of outperforming the polls and could potentially defy expectatins of a blue wave.
