The Trump administration announced new rules Wednesday aimed at preventing illegal immigrants from receiving payments through four refundable federal tax credits, a move officials estimate could save taxpayers about $3 billion.
The Treasury Department and IRS proposed tightening eligibility requirements for the adoption tax credit, child tax credit, American opportunity tax credit and earned income tax credit. Under the regulations, eligibility would be limited to U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals and qualified immigrants who are legally eligible for federal benefits.
