    Senator Kennedy said bill to make daylight savings time permanent faces ‘dog fight’

    Sen. John Kennedy, R-La., said that a bill to make daylight savings time permanent faces an uphill battle to pass the Senate. Kennedy said that President Donald Trump called him recently to ask him to support the bill, but he said there’s significant opposition in the Senate, Reuters reported. 
    “It’s ⁠going to be a dog fight,” Kennedy told reporters. 
    Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, D-N.H., expressed some hesitation to support the bill because it would create safety issues when kids go to school when it’s still dark on winter mornings. Senate Majority Leader John Thune said last week he wasn’t certain the bill could garner the 60 votes it needed to pass. 
    The House passed the measure last week. The bill would make it that clocks no longer return to standard time in November, although states could opt out of year-round daylight saving time if they do not currently observe it.
