The Senate confirmed Kevin Warsh to serve on the Federal Reserve’s Board of Governors on Tuesday.The vote was 51 to 44 and represents the first hurdle in replacing Jerome Powell as chairman. Trump has tapped Warsh for the top job as Powell’s term is set to expire.
The Senate is expected to hold a separate vote on installing Warsh as chairman later this week.
Powell’s term on the Board of Governors is not set to expire until January 2028 and he has indicated he may remain on the Board after his chairmanship ends to see out the resolution of a probe into the renovation of the Federal Reserve building.
The Department of Justice launched a criminal probe of Powell over the project, though it later dropped the investigation and a separate report from Federal Reserve Inspector General Michael Horowitz is expected soon.
