Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., threw his support behind progressive Abdul El-Sayed on Wednesday, just hours after El-Sayed was declared the winner of Michigan’s Democratic Senate primary, a race that exposed how little control the party’s establishment wing now holds over its own base.
El-Sayed narrowly defeated Rep. Haley Stevens, D-Mich., the establishment-favored candidate, in a contest so close it was not called until Wednesday morning. The primary had been widely framed as a proxy fight between the Democratic Party’s progressive flank and its longtime leadership, and El-Sayed’s win handed the left another symbolic victory over the party regulars who have spent the cycle trying to keep them off the ticket.
