San Diego officials identified the three victims Tuesday who were killed in a shooting at the Islamic Center of San Diego this week, before the suspected shooters killed themselves.Islamic Center of San Diego Director Imam Taha Hassane identified two of the victims as Nadir Awad, who lived across the street from the center, and Mansour Kazlha, who worked at the center for the last four decades, per USA Today.
San Diego Police Chief Scott Wahl identified the third victim as Amin Abdullah, who was the center’s security guard whose actions allegedly prevented the shooting from being much worse.
“He immediately observed the threat to everyone at the mosque, began to engage them in gunfire; both suspects returned fire,” Wahl told reporters. “His actions without a doubt delayed, distracted and ultimately deterred these two individuals from gaining access to the greater areas of the mosque where as many as 140 kids were within 15 feet of these suspects.”
The shooting occurred Monday and was allegedly carried out by two teenagers. No motive has been identified but the incident is being treated as a hate crime.
The suspects have been identified by San Diego police as Cain Clark, 17, and 18-year-old Caleb Vazquez.
