At least 37 people were killed after a Russian drone strike hit an ammunition storage facility near Kyiv and triggered a massive series of explosions, Ukrainian officials said Saturday, making it one of the deadliest attacks in the capital region this year. The strike occurred Friday night in Myla, a village west of Kyiv.
The initial drone attack ignited a fire that spread to explosives stored at the facility, producing a strong detonation that damaged nearby homes and other buildings.
Dozens of people were injured, while hundreds of residents were evacuated from the area. A facility housing elderly and disabled people was also damaged.
Among those killed was Taras Didych, a local community leader who had gone to the scene after the attack to assist with the emergency response.
