The lifetime cost of achieving eight traditional American Dream milestones has risen to more than $5.3 million, according to an Investopedia analysis released in October 2026. Private-sector wages and salaries rose 3.1% in the 12 months through June, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ (BLS) Employment Cost Index, a slower pace than the American Dream price tag. Gallup polling cited in the report found that 69% of Americans expect to personally achieve the American Dream, down four percentage points from 2024, when the figure stood higher. The same analysis notes that only 45% of nonretirees expect to have enough money to live comfortably once they leave work.
