President Trump announces $2 billion investment in critical mining, $180 million in mining schools

President Donald Trump announced Friday $2 billion investments in critical mining and a total of $180 million in investments into mining schools to help bolster the American mining workforce. The War Department will invest $80 million into multiple schools of mines and metallurgy, including the Colorado School of Mines, the South Dakota School of Mines, and Johns Hopkins University, the Pentagon said.
The War Department investments will be used to build technology innovation hubs, form partnerships between students and the defense industry and certify hundreds of new students with advanced degrees in mining, geology, and metallurgy.
The Department of Energy is also investing $100 million in 14 mining schools to rejuvenate the next-generation workforce and double the number of graduates with mining, minerals, and associated supply chain credentials.
The War Department is also investing over $2 billion of its budget in critical mining projects and manufacturers, including $1.4 billion to California’s Sila Nanotechnologies, to expand production of silicon-carbon batteries and buildout a lithium-ion battery cell manufacturing facility.
“President Trump is ensuring America’s critical materials and critical supply chains are robust and secure to reduce reliance on hostile foreign countries, protect our national security, and strengthen the economic resilience of vital industries,” the White House said in a fact sheet.
The announcement marks the latest investment from the Trump administration, which has signed or approved 160 minerals deals totaling nearly $40 billion since January 2025.
