Nearly 150,000 mail ballots rejected in California primary, largely due to late mailing

Mail-in ballots for nearly 150,000 California voters were rejected for the state’s June primary, according to the secretary of state’s office. The volume of rejected ballots is a spike over recent elections — 108,982 mail ballots were rejected in 2024 and 105,818 in 2025 — and the primary reason for the rejection numbers is the ballots missed the deadline. 
California is trying to make it easy for anyone to vote, and among the changes the state has made is sending ballots to every registered voter, the Associated Press reported. Ballots that arrive at the election office up to seven days late can still be counted, so long as they’re postmarked by Election Day. 
One reason for the late-arriving ballots may be changes at the U.S. Postal Services that impact when ballots are postmarked.
The 150,000 rejected mail ballots represent a rate of 1.73% of all mail-in ballots.
