Minnesota prosecutors charge ICE agent with assault over February incident

Prosecutors in Minneapolis charged an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent with assault, alleging the agent pointing a gun at motorists on a state highway during the immigration crackdown in the Minnesota city earlier this year. The prosecutors say the agent, Gregory Donnell Morgan Jr., pointed a gun at two people in a car while attempting to pass them in an unmarked vehicle, the New York Times first reported. 
The Department of Homeland Security did not respond to a request for comment from Just the News. Morgan could not be reached for comment. 
Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty said she believes this is the first state charge against a federal agent involved in the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown. 
“There is no such thing as absolute immunity for federal agents who violate the law in the state of Minnesota,” Moriarty said at a press conference.
The charges stem from local prosecutors’ wider investigation into the federal immigration enforcement operation in Minneapolis and St. Paul, the Twin Cities, earlier this year. The operation, named Metro Surge, was characterized by significant clashes between federal agents and local protesters. 
Two of those clashes involved the fatal shootings of Renee Good and Alex Pretti, American citizens. Good attempted to block immigration officers with her vehicle before attempting to drive away, nearly hitting an officer who fired multiple shots into her vehicle. Pretti was killed during a physical clash with immigration officers.
Both high-profile shootings are part of the prosecutors’ review, the New York Times reported.
