Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, a Democrat, endorsed Abdul El-Sayed after his victory in Tuesday’s primary, after previously endorsing his opponent, Rep. Haley Stevens. “Congratulations to Jocelyn Benson, Abdul El-Sayed, and every Democrat who won up and down the ballot in this primary. They’ve got my support as we fight like hell together to win in November,” Whitmer said Wednesday in a post on X.
El-Sayed narrowly won against moderate Stevens. With roughly 99% of the vote counted, the former Wayne County health official leads the four-term representative by fewer than 15,000 votes, The Hill reported. He will now run against Rep. Mike Rogers, who ran unopposed in the Republican primary, in the general election.
With the primary decided, the Michigan Democrats are turning their focus to defeating the Republicans.
“Together, let’s stop MAGA Republicans so we can get to work and deliver results for the people of Michigan,” Gretchen said in her post.
Stevens also offered her support to El-Sayed. She called him on Wednesday to concede the race and told him she is “proud” to “offer him my full support” in the general election.
