First lady Melania Trump negotiated a temporary humanitarian ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine in the city of Oleshky. The ceasefire will begin on Oct. 29 and allow for a civilian evacuation of the city. Oleshky sits on the Russian-controlled side of the Dnieper river, opposite the provincial capital of Kherson, which is in Ukrainian hands. Cross-river exchanges have persisted for years since the Russian withdrawal from the river’s right bank.
“The situation in Oleshky is dire. Oleshky is a front-line war city on the brink of disaster. Oleshky’s remaining population is comprised primarily of elderly residents who urgently need medical attention, medicine, food, and clean water,” Trump said in a statement.
“The people of Oleshky have limited electricity, live amid mined roads, and endure regular military attacks,” she went on. “It was abundantly clear that without my intervention, the possibility to bring humanitarian aid into the city and to evacuate the elderly would be impossible.”
The first lady has been heavily involved in humanitarian efforts in the Ukraine War, most notably working to reunite families separated from their children by the conflict.
