Former national security advisor John Bolton will plead guilty to retaining classified information, Fox News reported, citing “two sources.”The FBI searched Bolton’s home in August of last year. The investigation began during the Biden administration, though it was reportedly not pursued with vigor until FBI Director Kash Patel assumed his post.
Bolton previously served under President Donald Trump in his first term, until his firing over significant differences in foreign policy. He has since become a prominent critic of the administration.
The Department of Justice sued Bolton in 2020 over his memoir over an alleged failure to conduct a pre-publication check for classified information, though it dropped the matter the following year.
Retention of classified documents by senior personnel has been a contentious issue in recent years. The FBI raided Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in 2022 and his retention of documents formed the basis of special counsel Jack Smith’s indictment against him.
Special counsel Robert Hur also investigated President Joe Biden’s retention of classified materials after leaving the vice presidency.
