Peak Energy, a U.S. developer of grid-scale storage systems backed by General Motors, said its sodium-ion battery platform is projected to cost about 20 percent less than comparable lithium-ion systems for stationary energy storage, according to the company. The announcement, reported by industry outlets in June and October 2026, centers on cells designed specifically for grid applications rather than electric vehicles.
The company said the passively cooled platform eliminates the need for active cooling equipment, a design choice it links to the projected cost reduction.
