A coalition of scientists in Germany, India and the Netherlands has concluded that OpenAI’s ChatGPT retains and interprets user inputs to assemble detailed psychological profiles, according to a study presented at the ACM Web Conference 2026. The research drew on donated chat logs from 80 real-world ChatGPT users who obtained their conversation histories through European data privacy laws, according to the study.
The study states that chatbot memory offers a “new form of personalization derived from users’ self-disclosed information divulged within private conversations,” and its authors called for closer examination of the mechanisms involved. The findings were reported by Gizmodo and summarized by other outlets, which characterized the research as a warning about how chatbots build “algorithmic self-portraits” of users as they retain information for a hyper-personalized experience [1][2].
