France declined to place climate policy on the G7 agenda this week to please the Trump administration, which has little interest in prioritizing the subject. The decision comes amid ongoing rows between the U.S. and other NATO members over the ongoing Iran war that have seen Trump and Cabinet ministers openly question the merits of the alliance.
An advisor to the French ecological transition minister told Politico that “[w]e chose to focus on less contentious issues.”
“We have chosen not to tackle the climate issue head-on,” he advisor added. “Why? Because the United States’ positions on this issue are well known, and we felt … that tackling this issue head-on with the United States within the G7 framework would not send a message of unity.”
Also this week, former U.S. Ambassador to NATO Kurt Volker cautioned NATO allies against vocalizing their opposition to the Iran war to avoid needlessly antagonizing Trump.
“You might think that this is a huge folly and going to have terrible consequences, but you don’t have to say it,” he said. “By saying it, you alienate Donald Trump and you run the risk that he will then link your unhappiness with his policies to his unhappiness for some of your policies.”
