Ian A. Brinksman, 42, of Washington, D.C., was arrested Friday, Oct. 23, 2026, by the FBI on a charge of unlawfully transmitting national defense information, the Justice Department announced. Brinksman, a former contractor who provided services to the CIA, held a top-secret security clearance with access to sensitive compartmented information, according to the department.
Prosecutors allege that Brinksman accessed classified reports beyond the scope of his duties and passed that information to a romantic partner who operates a publication on Substack. The Justice Department did not identify the journalist or the publication by name in its statement. The arrest followed a search of Brinksman’s residence in the nation’s capital, federal authorities said.
