A study published in the journal Cancer Epidemiology has identified an association between daily consumption of sugary drinks and an increased risk of developing gastric cancer. The report, released on August 17, 2026, indicates that participants who consumed at least one sugary drink per day had a 32% higher risk of gastric cancer compared with those who rarely or never consumed them. Researchers followed a cohort of 78,000 adults for an average of 12 years, during which 580 cases of gastric cancer were identified.
The findings were adjusted for age, sex, body mass index, smoking, and family history of cancer, according to the study. The analysis adds to a growing body of evidence connecting sugary drink intake to various cancer types. A separate analysis drawing from over 112,000 participants in two long-running U.S. health studies — the Nurses’ Health Study and the Health Professionals Follow-up Study — reported that individuals who drank sugar-sweetened beverages more than once per day had over twice the gastric cancer risk compared with those who rarely consumed them [1].
