China said Friday that it opposed President Donald Trump’s “economic D-Day” threat against Iranian trading partners who support the country amid its war with the United States and Israel.Trump made the threat on Wednesday, stating it would amount to the “most crushing economic operation ever taken against any country,” and constitute “economic warfare.”
China’s foreign ministry spokesperson, Lin Jian, urged both sides to reach a peaceful deal that would end the conflict, stating that “sanctions and pressure tactics are not the solution,” and that sanctions do not “fit the interest of any party.”
Iran has also condemned Trump’s threat of an elevated economic campaign against Tehran, according to CNN, stating it was prepared to “sacrifice our wealth” to defend the country’s “dignity and honor.”
The Chinese statement comes after Trump warned that countries that try to help Iran will face “tremendous economic consequences.”
“Today, I am also announcing that ANY country that allows its financial institutions, businesses, airports, or government entities to provide any type of lifeline to Iran will itself face tremendous economic consequences,” he wrote on Truth Social. “Oil smuggling, swap lines, cash transfers, exchange houses, ship registries, front companies — It all needs to stop NOW.”
