Anthropic’s $80.7B loss highlights AI industry’s financial risks ahead of blockbuster IPO
Anthropic reported an $80.7 billion net loss for the first half of 2026, driven by a $72 billion accounting charge tied to convertible notes rather than cash expenses – ahead of a potential IPO in November at a valuation approaching $2 trillion.
Revenue surged to $16.3 billion in the first half of 2026 from $1.1 billion a year earlier, with third-quarter revenue jumping 45% to $16.8 billion, though slowing sequential growth disappointed some investors.
Computing and infrastructure expenses rose to nearly $9 billion in the first half of 2026, with commitments of at least $518 billion over a decade for cloud services and chips from Google, Amazon, Microsoft, Nvidia and Broadcom.
The company’s business is heavily dependent on a few large clients: Two customers account for one-fifth of first-half revenue. It also faces risks from growing anti-data center and anti-AI voter movements.
CEO Dario Amodei and President Daniela Amodei each received base salaries of about $655,000 in 2025, with total compensation packages of roughly $18 million and $16.5 million respectively, while co-founders pledged 80% of stakes to philanthropy.
