Grand Canyon flooding could leave impacts, economists warn

It’s been 55 days since flooding, which left three hikers dead, ripped apart Grand Canyon National Park’s water infrastructure.Since the Aug. 29 floods, water access has been cut off across virtually all of America’s 11th largest national park, with severe restrictions in place after 40% of the pipeline that hauled water from Phantom Ranch to the North Rim was torn by the flooding. The National Park Service has tentatively slotted Nov. 16 as the day when water will begin pumping through Bright Angel Creek to the area’s new water treatment plant.
In the meantime, the economic damage from this year’s stormy weather rages on.
According to data from the NPS, 2026 visitor totals are on pace to finish 27.9% behind where they stood a year ago and 33.4% below the park’s totals from 2024.
Grand Canyon National Park officials have not released cost estimates for the 2026 floods and did not return multiple calls or emails from The Center Square for this story.
    A Grand Canyon State-sized hit
Any drop-off in visitation means big bucks lost for the state, with Grand Canyon National Park chipping in at least $1 billion in economic output each year from 2021 to 2024, according to NPS data.
Dari Duval, an extension economist for the University of Arizona’s School of Natural Resources & the Environment, told The Center Square that the 107-year-old National Park has an outsized impact on the state at large, economically.
“Long story short, the Grand Canyon is a really important driver of tourism in the state and of visitor spending in those surrounding communities,” Duval told The Center Square. “And we know that flagship parks like the Grand Canyon are especially important in that regard because not only do they attract local or in-state visitors, but they also attract people from across the country and from around the world.”
This year’s slide in visitation at the Northern Arizona park is far from a one-year deal, though, Duval said.
She cited last year’s Dragon Bravo Fire on the Grand Canyon’s North Rim, which torched close to 150,000 acres and the area’s iconic Grand Canyon Lodge, along with 98 other historic buildings, as part of the reason for the 5.5% drop in park visitation from 2024 to 2025.
“You have sort of overlapping or stacking effects of these different events, where one leads to another,” Duval said, saying that the 2025 fire dampened visitor counts along the North Rim this year.
On top of all that is the flooding associated in part with the burn scar, Duval said. She added there were closures of trails and bridges, as well as “bridges that were just wiped out.”
And Duval pointed to overnight lodging and accommodations in Grand Canyon Village and neighboring communities such as Tusayan, Williams and Flagstaff.
Those hotels and restaurant operators will see downstream economic impacts because of the park’s limitations, which could hurt the region’s economy, Duval said.
“You would expect that, to the extent that people’s visits are deterred by that, that would have effects on the local businesses,” Duval added. “A lot of employment is linked to tourism around there. So it’s a concern.”
Divounguy said on Friday that local economies like those in towns around the park will undoubtedly take a hit financially if services in the park or access to the Canyon itself are limited.
The Center Square chief economist compared Northern Arizona’s current predicament to that faced by businesses in Las Vegas, where tourism spending has largely plateaued due to a slump in visitors.
“It’s going to have a huge impact,” Divounguy told The Center Square. “If the largest share of your local economy is coming from tourism, any time you have a big event that prevents tourists from coming to the area, the revenues are going to take a hit.”
