    AGA Guidelines Recommend Fiber as First-Line Treatment for Hemorrhoids

    The American Gastroenterological Association (AGA) has released updated clinical practice guidelines in Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology that emphasize lifestyle modifications as the primary approach to managing hemorrhoids. According to the guidelines, increased fiber intake is labeled a “reasonable first-line therapy” for the condition.

    More than half of people over age 50 will experience hemorrhoids, according to the National Institutes of Health, as cited in reports on the new guidance. Hemorrhoids, which are swollen veins in the anus or lower rectum, can cause pain, itching and rectal bleeding. The AGA update advises patients and providers to prioritize dietary changes over quick-fix products.
