Tennessee officials are suffering a well-earned beating after their inability to carry out an execution this week. Botched, bungled, or bumbled – whatever you want to call it, the state execution of convicted murderer Christa Pike went sideways, not once but twice. For some reason, the lethal injection wasn’t lethal. Theories abound as to how this could possibly have happened, but so far Tennessee authorities haven’t said much, save Gov. Bill Lee, who announced Tennessee Department of Correction Commissioner Frank Strada is resigning.
One theory as to why two doses of pentobarbital just didn’t do the job is being advanced by a doctor who had examined Pike. Anesthesiologist Dr. Joel Zivot, interviewed by TMZ, asserted: “Pike does not possess some kind of magical pentobarbital resistance; it’s not because she has some unique physiology that resists the effect of pentobarbital.” Rather, Zivot theorized that Pike’s thrombocytosis condition formed blood clots that stopped the medication from moving throughout her body and instead clotted, causing the burning sensation that she complained of when strapped to the gurney inside the death chamber.
