White House communications director Steven Cheung told reporters Wednesday that President Donald Trump’s mid-trip decision to swap aircraft during his overseas journey was a calculated security move, a claim that ran headlong into a small problem: Trump had already told the world about it on Truth Social.
The episode unfolded during Trump’s return from the NATO summit in Ankara, Turkey. Rather than fly the newly retrofitted Boeing 747 gifted by Qatar, the same plane he had taken to Turkey, Trump boarded one of the older presidential aircraft for the leg from Ankara to Royal Air Force Mildenhall in the United Kingdom. The newer jet flew separately to Britain without the president aboard. Once in the U.K., Trump climbed back onto the Qatari-gifted plane for the trans-Atlantic flight home to Joint Base Andrews.
