On Sept. 30, 1976, just three years after abortion was legalized across the nation, a freshman member of the House of Representatives — a Republican in a Congress dominated in both chambers by Democrats — managed to successfully push through what has since been known as the Hyde Amendment.
The Hyde Miracle might be a more fitting sobriquet for the amendment that has saved an estimated 2.7 million lives by prohibiting federal taxpayer funding for most abortions.
