The Defense Department announced Monday that it has changed protocols for its media briefing room inside the Pentagon amid its appeal of a court decision on media access that includes the relocation of reporters to workspace outside the building.U.S. District Court Judge Paul Friedman on Friday dismissed parts of the Pentagon’s guidelines that were released last year and ordered it to restore the press passes of seven journalists for the New York Times, which brought the lawsuit challenging the guidelines.
The department said in the interim, without conceding the validity of the court’s analysis, it has complied with the court’s order while preserving the department’s “legitimate security interests and its statutory obligation.”
In the interim, the department will respond to the court order to close the correspondents corridor within the Pentagon and relocate its workspace to an annex facility outside the Pentagon, which is still under construction.
