Office of Management and Budget Director Russ Vought admitted to lawmakers Wednesday that the White House has not settled on a “ballpark” number of how much it will need from Congress for the Iran conflict. The comment occurred during his testimony in front of the House Budget Committee regarding President Donald Trump’s $1.5 trillion budget request for the Pentagon for fiscal year 2027.
“We’re not ready to come to you with a request,” Vought said, per Politico. “We’re still working on it. We’re working through to figure out what’s needed in this fiscal year versus next fiscal year.”
When asked if there was even a “ballpark” for how much Congress would need to sign off on, the director replied that he does not have a “ballpark” for the panel. However, the Pentagon last month sent the White House a request for $200 billion in emergency funding to support military operations in the Middle East.
The exchange comes as the United States and Iran engage in peace negotiations this week in hopes of ending the six-week conflict. The U.S. and Iran are currently in a two-week ceasefire.
