In a close vote, Virginia voters have approved a redistricting plan that calls for a new congressional map that could gain as many as four seats in the U.S. Congress for Democrats. The “Yes” votes were 50.3% to the “No” votes at 49.7% with 82% of the total vote counted when the Associate Press made the call at 7:49 p.m. ET.
Currently, there are six Democratic congressmen from Virginia and five Republicans. This new redistricting plan is expected to see Democrats win 10 of the 11 seats in the midterm elections.
According to the Washington Post, at least $93 million financed the race, most of it being what it called “untraceable ‘dark money,’” with supporters of the measure outspending the opponents.
