Several veterans’ groups joined an amicus brief calling for the construction of President Donald Trump’s triumphal arch near Arlington National Cemetery to begin soon. The brief is in response to a lawsuit from three Vietnam War veterans who say the arch would be disruptive to the visitors’ experience of the cemetery and clash with the intent of nearby monuments, the Washington Post reported.
However, four of the groups who were named in the amicus brief issued a statement saying they do not “endorse or oppose any specific architectural design or proposal” and asking Americans to unite around a new monument honoring veterans in Memorial Circle.
The brief filed in support of the project argues it will further “the public’s profound interest in honoring our veterans and the ideals for which they fought.” It also argues that its “no more partisan” than the other monuments in the nation’s capital, and the veterans suing to stop the project have no grounds to oppose it.
