The Vatican said Thursday that Pope Leo XIV has resumed his daily activities independently, just days after surgery, and that his latest chest x-ray shows “good recovery of the lung that underwent surgery.”The Pope was diagnosed with lung cancer earlier this week and underwent surgery to have the lower lobe of his right lung removed. The diagnosis was previously suspected by preoperative tests but was confirmed during the procedure.
The Pope’s doctors said he “carried out his daily activities independently and continues a full range of physiotherapy, as his postoperative recovery progresses normally,” according to Vatican News.
The Holy See Press Office also reported that the Pope concelebrated Mass on Thursday in a room that was specifically prepared for the purpose on the 10th floor of Rome’s Gemelli Hospital, where he is recovering from the surgery.
The surgery was performed by a team at the hospital and was led by the hospital’s chief thoracic surgeon, Dr. Stefano Margaritora. The surgery itself lasted 90 minutes, but he was in the operating room for three hours.
The Pope is expected to remain in the hospital for approximately a week, according to ABC News.
