South Korea announced Monday that the United States has canceled a joint military drill with its forces that was scheduled for next month over resource constraints tied to the war with Iran.Reports of the cancellation come shortly after President Donald Trump ordered the U.S. to scale back its drills with the country, citing his good relationship with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and South Korea’s refusal to support him in the war in Iran.
The biennial exercise, known as Ssangyong, or “Twin Dragons,” consists of thousands of American and South Korean marines rehearsing amphibious landings with the use of warships, aircraft and ground forces.
South Korea said the U.S. notified it of the cancellation back in June, citing the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, but that Washington and Seoul were still consulting on eventually resuming the exercise, according to The Hill.
The Trump administration also canceled the exercise in the president’s first term, but the United States resumed the exercises under the Biden administration in 2023.
