UK Defense Secretary Healey resigns, citing budget cuts

UK Defense Secretary John Healey resigned on Thursday, citing the unwillingness of the Starmer government to commit financial resources to revitalize the country’s defense.”We came into government, recognizing Britain faced a new era of threat which demanded a new era for defence [sic],” he wrote to Prime Minister Keir Starmer. “The SDR we jointly commissioned set the 10-year vision to transform our Armed Forces, strengthen alliances, invest in the technology that is changing warfare and back British industry to make defence an engine for growth.”
“Since then, you have been unable, and the Treasury has been unwilling, to commit the resources that the nation needs to defend the country at this time of rising threats,” he continued.
Healey further asserted that Starmer’s budgetary plans fell “well short” of what was needed to restore the UK’s defense and that he was “left with no other option” but to resign.
Healey’s resignation is the latest blow to the Starmer government, which has seen a series of resignations over scandals related to Jeffrey Epstein and poor polling numbers. It also comes amid riots in Northern Ireland and mounting opposition within England to mass immigration.
