The United Arab Emirates on Friday fingered Iran for Thursday strikes on two tankers traveling the Strait of Hormuz amid the ongoing war with the United States.Iran has sought to close the critical waterway to shut down commercial traffic and has repeatedly harried ships attempting to move through the area. The recent strikes drew sharp condemnation from Abu Dhabi.
“The United Arab Emirates expressed its strong condemnation and denunciation of the aggressive Iranian attack that targeted two ADNOC tankers as they were crossing the Strait of Hormuz, without any injuries being reported,” read a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
“The UAE stressed the need for Iran to stop these aggressive attacks in order to ensure its full commitment to halting all hostilities and to fully and unconditionally reopen the Strait, thereby achieving regional security and the stability of the global economy and trade,” the statement continued.
Traffic through the waterway has slowed amid the conflict, with the U.S. imposing a naval blockade on the Persian Gulf and Iran attacking ships within.
The began in late February with joint U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran that killed Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
