U.S. measles cases in 2026, the highest since 1991, according to new CDC data

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Friday reported that there have been 2,318 confirmed cases so far in 2026. The figure beats last year’s total of 2,289, and it’s the highest number of measles cases seen in the U.S. since 1991. 
The majority of people infected with the disease, 93%, are unvaccinated or their vaccination status wasn’t known, according to the CDC. 
The rate of cases requiring hospitalization stands at 7% — 151 out of 2,318 cases — down from 11% in 2025, when there were 243 hospitalizations out of 2,289 cases. So far, there have been no deaths from measles in 2026. There were three deaths last year.
