BREAKING: U.S. Bill Moves to BAN Geoengineering Nationwide
New legislation would criminalize aerosol spraying, cloud seeding, and other weather-modification programs, while raising major questions about aircraft emissions already altering the atmosphere.
A new bill introduced in Congress could impose the first sweeping federal ban on geoengineering in the United States.
The legislation would make it a criminal offense to release chemicals or biological agents into the atmosphere to alter weather, sunlight, or climate, targeting technologies such as stratospheric aerosol injection, solar radiation modification, and cloud seeding.
But the proposal also highlights a controversial gap: while it aims to shut down intentional geoengineering programs, federal agencies have already acknowledged that emissions from commercial aircraft can linger in the atmosphere, spread across vast areas, and influence cloud formation and sunlight.
