Trump’s $25 million Meta purchase and SpaceX debt investment signal troubling conflicts
President Donald Trump’s August financial disclosures show he bought up to $25 million in Meta (Facebook) stock and millions in SpaceX debt, leading to accusations of a conflict of interest between his personal profits and public policy decisions.
The largest single trade was a Meta stock purchase just weeks before Trump hosted Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg at the White House, where Zuckerberg pledged $600 billion in U.S. investments.
The SpaceX investment is especially troubling because Trump bought millions in Musk’s company debt on Aug. 18, only to sign a new space policy on Aug. 20 that would drastically expand commercial rocket launches. SpaceX would be a huge beneficiary of this policy.
This is part of a wider pattern: Trump also bought Tyson Foods stock on the same day he signed a proclamation to boost beef imports, which could benefit that company. In total, he made 517 separate trades in August alone.
While the White House claims these are computer-run trades in “independently managed” accounts, this is an unprecedented approach for a president. Recent presidents avoided this by using blind trusts, and this behavior erodes public trust by making the government look like a system rigged for insiders.
