    Trump shifts course on intelligence chief, names Pulte as acting DNI while searching for permanent pick

    President Donald Trump announced he is interviewing five candidates to permanently lead the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, pulling back from a selection that had drawn sharp criticism from members of his own party. In the meantime, Trump tapped Pulte, currently the chief of the Federal Housing Finance Agency, to serve as acting DNI starting June 19, with a clear mandate: downsize the sprawling intelligence office immediately.

    The move amounts to a course correction after bipartisan pushback threatened to stall the renewal of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, one of the intelligence community’s most relied-upon tools for tracking foreign threats. Trump framed the shift not as a retreat but as a practical step, telling reporters in the Oval Office that Pulte would hold the post for a “short while” as the White House narrows its search.
