President Donald Trump on Friday expanded sanctions on the Cuban government as part of its efforts to force Havana to the negotiating table.Trump has previously hinted at what he called a “friendly takeover” of the island and its government has confirmed talks with Washington.
The latest sanctions include persons with links to the energy sector who have aided Cuba as well as those who have “materially assisted, sponsored, or provided financial, material, or technological support for, or goods or services to or in support of, the Government of Cuba or any person whose property or interests in property are blocked pursuant to this order.”
Cuba has struggled with its faltering energy grid in recent months, leading to humanitarian issues. Washington has attempted to use the situation to force concessions from the Cuban government.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio in March called for “new leadership” on the island and the administration has repeatedly suggested it could move to end the communist regime at some point in the near future.
