President Donald Trump on Tuesday delivered a speech in which he highlighted America’s English heritage during the visit of King Charles III of the United Kingdom.”Honoring the British King might seem an ironic beginning to our celebration of 250 years of American independence — but in fact, no tribute could be more appropriate,” Trump said. “Long before Americans had a nation or Constitution, we first had a culture, a character, and a creed. Before we ever proclaimed our independence, Americans carried within us the rarest of gifts: moral courage, and it came from a small but mighty kingdom from across the sea.”
The original 13 colonies that achieved independence from Great Britain in the Revolutionary War were settled primarily by English and Scottish colonists from 1607-1776. The Kingdoms of Scotland and England merged to become Great Britain in 1707. The inclusion of Ireland led to the creation of the United Kingdom in 1801.
King Charles III is currently on his first state visit to the U.S. as reigning monarch of the UK. He is expected to deliver an address to Congress this evening.
